Is Microsoft Losing Publicity War?

I guess it's not a secret to anyone that many people complain about Vista, they simply hate it, they post negative comments on the web forums and so on. But are those complaints reasonable? These thing started to happen not after the Vista release, but some time before that! So, when Vista finally came out, it already had a negative image and it still has, no matter if it's a really good operating system. For instance, I know some people who are going to buy a laptop but they are scared to death by Vista, that sounds ridiculous and even stupid, but that's a fact. They don't want to have Windows Vista installed on their laptop instead they are trying to find one with XP installed.

It doesn't have anything to do with Vista qualities, only with its image as a faulty, unstable OS, where many applications don't work and your hardware don't work as well. Of course, it's not true, however that is the image of the OS. Although Microsoft says that Windows Vista sales are pretty ok, that image hurts it.

The same thing applies to Internet Explorer. Although IE8 has successfully passed the Acid Test, it is still considered to be a piece of junk, even though Microsoft deliberately issued a beta version for web developers who can play with it, who can tweak their web sites if they are not properly displayed in IE 8.

So, even though Microsoft release really good products, unfortunately they cannot get over their bad image. However, this applies only to the masses, because the IT professionals are usually better aware of the real quality of the Microsoft products.

IE8 beta-1 is a piece of junk. Did you test MS site with that? Did you test CodePlex site with IE-8 till now? Just do it plz before writing. Thanks

Vahid,

I don't see any problems with IE8, it does display the web sites well, besides it's only beta, so every found bug will get fixed before the release.

I really doubt the author has any experience outside of MS technology based IT shops. I hate MS products, wanna know why, let's talk about IE then. As of now, I have separate code branches for workarounds for IE 6 and 7, and the rest of the web world. Guess what will happen when IE 8 hits.

Speaking of Vista. It does suck bad. I was forced to get a computer with Vista on it coz I needed one urgently and did not have time to have it shipped from a vendor which gives you an option of not having an OS installed. I paid for something I didn't want. I have been running it for a week. I ahve already seen 5 blue screens. I told it not to install any updates, because a MS update screwed up my wireless card (its a standard HP dv5-1002 btw, came with Vista preinstalled), even so, my computer has been updated twice without my permission, resulting in a broken wireless driver again and me having to reinstall the OS for the 2nd time in a week. I am constantly paranoid about something breaking Vista, so my weekly backups have gone to being daily backups. I even resuscitated an old machine running Ubuntu for the express purpose of using it as a backup/CVS server.

And all this in just a week. Need I say more. I hate Vista. I hate the fact that I am forced to buy it when XP was working perfectly. So MS can go to hell, and so can MS centric developers who don't see the world outside of their own right-click-left-click-copy-paste world that they live in.

Hello,

Thanks for your feedback.

I have an experience of working with non MS technologies. I've been developing for a very long time with LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP), however I have Windows on my local machine, while Linux is isntalled on the web servers. But I haven't had any problems with MS. I also know many PHP developers who also use ASP.NET or at least take some interest in the technology. Moreover, there are even ASP.NET ports on PHP.

Regarding your experience with Vista, well it's hard for me to judge, because I don't have your PC configuration to test, but are you really sure that it's only Vista to blame?

By the way, have you heard anything about The Mojave Experiment? If not, then read this article - www.technewsworld.com/story/software/63999.html and visit this web site - http://www.mojaveexperiment.com/.

Basically, they showed "a brand new OS", the feedback was really positive, but in fact that OS was Windows Vista Wink.

One factor not readily apparent in Microsoft's presentation of its Mojave Experiment was the hardware the company used to run the OS.

I'll throw another problem with the Mojave Experiment:  They never said how long the focus group members got with Vista, what other applications may or may not have been on those machines or if the people in the study could add their own, or if the focus group members happened to have access to helpful "coaches" in case something went wrong.  Let us take the worst case hardware we can find that could possibly run Vista, put Vista on it, run a focus group over that experience for three months - alone, and then compare those results with the Mojave Experiment.  Seems fair doesn't it?

Just trying to be helpful here but I'd refrain from using marketing material/propaganda as a point in a discussion.

Oh, and to answer the actual question you asked:  Yes. Smile

Chris,

What is the point of running on the worst hardware? I suppose the worst hardware for Vista is actually running XP. I mean that there's no point of installing Vista on a slow machine. However the new fast machines are sold with Vista installed, they are quite capable of running it without problems. While slow low budget PCs are still sold with XP installed.

I think the Mojave experiment was total BS. You mean to tell me you picked up a bunch of computer ignoramuses who probably have never seen anything outside of Windows XP (I am talking about MacOS, Beryl, Compiz) and you dazzle them with translucent windows on controlled machines with pre-installed software, give me a break.

Let those users keep Vista for a week, open emails, install their Yahoo messenger and all that stuff, normal usage, then we can have a better idea. The Mojave experiment idea was done just so that pro-MS bloggers can write articles about it and have another point to say, "Vista is good, but its perception is bad".

My new Vista computer is a standard HP dv5-1002. I bought it from Best Buy, Vista came preinstalled on it along with nice big stickers that it is ready for Vista or something to that effect. And the dang thing just does not work. Anyways, I used my laptop for a few days, scratched it up good, messed up the registries and everything and exchanged it for another computer of the same model. Just my little way of saying "F*** you" to HP for selling a computer with such a junky OS. I literally wasted 3 days before I could get it to work with my software.
